Digital platform work

The implications for occupational safety and health (OSH)

Digital platform work: the implications for occupational safety and health (OSH)

Digital platform work is all paid work provided through, on or mediated by an online platform, that is, an online marketplace operating on digital technologies that facilitate the matching of demand for and supply of labour. The work provided through the platforms can be very diverse: it can involve complex or simple tasks, cognitive or manual tasks, and it can be provided online and be entirely virtual, or on-site and be provided in person. Digital platform work brings employment opportunities to workers, but it also entails a number of challenges and risks for workers' OSH that need to be addressed.

The workshop will bring together experts and policy-makers at the EU and Member State/EU country levels. The objective is to present and discuss the findings from EU-OSHA's research work consisting in an overview of research, policy and practices in relation to digital platform work and the implications for OSH. Part of this work is already available on EU-OSHA¨s website (reports, policy briefs, summaries available at https://osha.europa.eu/en/themes/digitalisation-work). More research is still on-going and will be presented at the workshop. The perspectives from other EU bodies will also be presented and discussed.
